Proposed Center for Reaching & Teaching the Whole Child

This morning I attended a truly inspiring meeting led by my colleague Dr. Nancy Markowitz about the development of a proposed center that would address the social and emotional needs of youth in schools. She and a number of our colleagues at SJSU have been meeting over the past two years to develop plans for this Center. We have followed closely (and advocate for) the work of CASEL (Collaborative for Academic, Social, and Emotional Learning) and have been eager to connect with local resource providers to learn about services that they offer to schools to support students’ social and emotional learning. I was truly energized to meet fellow like-minded advocates in the community who work so hard to provide innovative and effective programs to support our youth. Coming up for the 2009-2010 school year, we plan to provide forums to connect with administrators, teachers, and parents in the schools to share resources and to emphasize the importance of the social/emotional domain of learning.
